In Waves

I hate to say it, but this Jamie xx album didn’t quite hit like I was hoping. The production is obviously great—classic Jamie—but I gotta admit, some of the samples and vocal chops start to feel a little off after a few listens. This has always been a thing I’ve noticed with Jamie’s music, but here, it’s just more noticeable, and I can’t not bring it up.

That being said, the features are solid, especially The xx reunion on Waited All Night. My favorite track has to be Dafodil. At first, I wasn’t that into it, but after a few plays, it’s stuck in my head. The pulsing beat and John Glacier’s monotone vocals have this chill, downtempo vibe I’m really feeling. Kelsey Lu and Panda Bear also kill it on the track, and it’s giving me major Gosh vibes from In Waves.

I don’t have a ton more to say, but I’m just happy Jamie’s back with new music—even if a lot of it dropped before the album did. In Waves didn’t quite meet all my expectations, but there are still plenty of moments that remind me why Jamie xx is one of the best producers out there.
