Drive Home
My brother kept recommending me this project and I finally looked into it. Honestly, It took me a couple of listens to really get into this album, but once it clicked, I realized it’s a pretty amazing blend of rap and R&B. Her voice is insane, especially on tracks like "Lost!" with those big, soulful, synth-heavy chords—it’s pure ear candy. Then you've got tracks like "En Garde" where Tracy comes in with super energetic, fun rap verses, playing with her voice and bouncing between notes at the end of her lines. The mix of these two vibes keeps the album fresh the whole way through.
Sonically, it's just all over the place in the best way. It flows effortlessly between genres, and whether she’s rapping or singing, her vocals are always on point. Plus, the instrumentals? So freaking beautiful. The whole 1hr 6min runtime flies by. And it’s not just the music that stands out; the lyrics and the story told through the songs and skits really pulled me in. Usually, I don’t care much about skits, but here, it actually made the experience better. I get that the number of skits might throw some people off if you're not into the storyline, but I was hooked.
That said, the interludes in the second half do drag a bit. I’m sure there’s a solid story behind them, but on a casual listen, I wasn’t too invested in songs like "..." and its sequel just two tracks later. If you skip those, though, the album stays super consistent—every full track is solid. Overall, Portraits of Tracy shows a ton of potential here, and I’m hyped to see how they level up with their next project. This one’s easily one of the most unique albums I’ve heard in a while.
