So, TV Girl and George Clanton dropped a collab album—what?! Honestly, as someone who’s been a huge George Clanton fan for a while, this was not on my 2024 bingo card, but I’m so here for it. TV Girl’s whole psychedelic indie-pop vibe teaming up with George’s vaporwave/chillwave wizardry just makes sense. It’s like a cosmic genre match made in heaven. And the big question: does it deliver? I think so!
The album’s short—7 tracks, 27 minutes—but it packs a lot into that runtime. The production is hazy, catchy, and ridiculously immersive. Think punchy drums, dreamy synths, and trippy grooves that make you feel like you’re floating. George’s vocals? Not perfect, but they mesh with the chilly, psychedelic vibes almost too well.
The opener, Summer 2000 Baby, is such a standout. It’s got this super fun, nostalgic energy, with kids shouting harmonies on the chorus, punchy piano chords, and a groove that’s simple but so addictive. George really delivers vocally here, especially when he leans into those high notes while singing about not wasting your life—it’s just pure bliss. Definitely the most fun track on the album.
Another highlight is Take a Trip, which leans into the chillwave side hard. The spacey vibes, smooth production, and those little samples sprinkled throughout just elevate it. It’s one of those tracks you can zone out to in the best way possible. Outside of the singles, Everything Blue is a dreamy gem. The noisy climax halfway through transitions into another great sample, and while the sampling is pretty straightforward, it works. Butterflies is another banger—Jordana’s feature absolutely slaps, and the danceable groove on this one is next-level. When the beat drops back in, it’s chef’s kiss.
Now, the weaker moments. The Sweet Life feels a little too sparse and washed out compared to the rest of the album. George’s vocals don’t quite hit the mark here, and the reggae-like sample feels lifeless, even with the brief horn solo. It’s not bad, just kinda meh. Same with Yesterday’s World—the bouncy beat and quirky samples are cool, but the vocals don’t do much for me. These tracks aren’t bad, but they don’t stick the landing.
Overall, though? This collab is a win. TV Girl and George Clanton brought their A-game production-wise, and their styles just blend so well together. I wish the album ended as strong as it started, but hey, it’s still a solid listen. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into psychedelic vibes, dreamy production, and that perfect mix of indie pop and chillwave. I’m just glad they went for it and gave us this wild little project.
