BAD ASS F*CKING KID
Richmond rapper Nettspend just dropped his first album under a record label, and it’s a pretty big moment for him. If you’ve been following his journey, it’s wild to see how far he’s come. He started just a few years ago with his mixtape KiCKDOOR, which, let’s be real, wasn’t exactly a banger. Most people (myself included) weren’t feeling it, but there was definitely some potential there. Fast forward a few months, and he started turning heads with singles like “nothing like uuu” and “That One Song.” Those tracks really hinted at what he could do, and they had me hyped to see what he’d drop next.
Enter his debut album. Compared to his earlier stuff, this record feels like a massive step up. Honestly, it might even be one of the best albums in its genre this year. What makes it stand out for me is how tight and focused it is—it’s short and sweet, with beats that feel fresh and unique. He worked with a bunch of different producers, so every track brings something different. Like, “Gen Z Leak” has this Jersey Club Rap vibe that’s just infectious—it’s hands down my favorite on the album. Then there’s “Skipping Class,” which samples Grimes. As someone who loves hearing creative sampling, I was stoked to see how he flipped it, and yeah, it absolutely works. The production and mixing throughout the album are super clean, too, which just elevates everything.
Vocally, Nettspend’s come a long way. His delivery meshes way better with the beats now, and you can tell he’s put in work over the past year. The autotune he uses feels just right—enough to add some flair without being over the top. Sure, there are a couple of spots where his vocals aren’t as strong, but they’re short and don’t drag the album down. As for the lyrics, they’re decent, but I’ll be honest—I wasn’t here for deep bars. The vibes, the sound, and the energy are what hooked me.
Nettspend’s rise from dropping a so-so mixtape as a kid to becoming one of the most creative underground artists out there is seriously impressive. This album proves he’s got something special going on. It makes me even more excited to see where he takes things from here. If this is his starting point under a label, I can only imagine what’s next.
