Angel Eyes

Man, I was ready to give up on Kenny Mason. After being seriously let down by his last few projects—especially that album 9 from earlier this year—I didn’t have high hopes for Angel Eyes. But I figured I’d give it one last shot, and honestly? It’s a solid redemption arc.

Right out the gate, tracks like “INTUITION” show Kenny really settling into a chill, laid-back vibe that works for him. Even when songs like “HOW TO SURVIVE” don’t fully click because of his vocal delivery, the production is strong enough to carry it through. And then there’s “ON THE WAY,” which shifts things into this grungy, angsty lane but somehow keeps that same relaxed energy. Throw in dreamy tracks like the title cut and “EVERYBODY KNOWS,” where his flows are chef’s kiss, and you start to see him in a groove.

Even “HOODRAT,” the lead single, pulls it off with this gorgeous looped vocal sample that really ties the project together sonically. That said, not every experiment lands. “BEEN HAVING” tries to lean into pop-rock territory with cleaner songwriting than his earlier stabs at it, but it’s still kind of forgettable. Then there’s “TEEN GOHAN,” where he doubles down on this mellow ballad thing—fun for the moment, but it doesn’t really stick. And his hooks? They’re catchy, sure, but they tend to fizzle out once the song ends.

At the end of the day, Kenny Mason’s got talent for days, but he’s still figuring out how to package it all together. Angel Eyes feels like his most cohesive project since his debut, and it shows glimpses of what could happen if he went all in on this smoother, more focused sound. He’s not there yet, but this is a promising step forward.
