American Teen

Despite the disappointing score and reviews, I’m going to defend this record as a critical masterpiece and a pop album that’s filled with many enjoyable songs. This record made a massive impression in 2017 and I think it gets more hate than it should. I actually remember hearing songs from this project well before the album dropped, or even knowing who Khalid was. There are some major things wrong with it: this record is horribly inconsistent. Tracks that have garnered billions of streams lie in an album that’s a textbook case for slow, boring and skippable songs. There are no features, which makes the album have little variety to keep your attention and shake things up. Track after track becomes repetitive for me after the first 30 seconds and the production is flat with no beat switches or variety. Despite these obvious flaws, this record is fun and has many great pop songs. It’s a bit better than average, but its inconsistency honestly takes away tremendously from what it could have been. This is an enjoyable listen if you dose Khalid’s music correctly, but due to its inconsistency, it’s far away from being great, just mediocre.
