Disco!
This record helps to cement Mike as one of the most consistent rappers working and dropping music today, continuing his trend of releasing a new album every year for over half a decade, each being a solid collection of tracks. The album's biggest strength lies in its production; as implied by its title "Disco," the beats are active and upbeat, with Mike delivering catchy, smooth bangers that are addictive to listen to. Tracks like the opener "Evil Eye" and "Crystal Ball" incorporate a slight smooth jazz influence that complements Mike's flow, allowing him to find the perfect pockets to fit into. "Crystal Ball," in particular, evokes a classic vaporwave feel, reminiscent of old elevator music, which I find particularly appealing. Mike also excels on the more experimental, atmospheric tracks like "Frogville (Mk Ultra)," which sounds like it's submerged underwater with its bubble and water samples, and "alarmed!," which features a distorted, noisy beat balanced by great drum work. On the rapping front, Mike delivers another solid performance, although there are a few moments, like his vocal delivery on "Sandra," that didn't resonate with me. However, his verses on "Crystal Ball" and "Spiral / Disco (Outro)" stand out, particularly the former, where he flexes his likability rather than wealth, making him relatable, and the latter, where he discusses how rap has been a therapeutic outlet for him, emphasizing its role in his recovery from personal struggles. While this might not be my favorite album from Mike, it's still incredibly solid and likely in my top three. Although the emotions expressed on "Tears of Joy" are more powerful, hearing Mike's journey of recovery and resilience on this record makes me happy for him and hopeful for his future.
