HAN

Berhana's debut album, HAN, is a smoothly cohesive and meticulously crafted project that showcases his dedication through superb production, captivating vocals, and engaging melodies. The album's seamless transitions between themes are intermittently punctuated by unique in-flight announcements, functioning as thematic roadmaps akin to guiding a reader through an essay. Notable tracks include singles like “I Been (ft. Crush)” and “Lucky Strike,” as well as the lively “Drnuk.” “Lucky Strike” stands out with its funky, existential lyrics and peppy vibe, while “Drnuk” captures the essence of a joyous, drunken escapade. Despite being a solid debut, HAN pales slightly in comparison to Berhana's self-titled EP. The concept of the album, highlighted by female-voiced flight attendant interludes, makes for an easily absorbable listening experience. Tracks like "HN 001" and "Golden" demonstrate excellent transitions, while "HN 005" and "I Wasn't Told" feature lush orchestrations with effective use of orchestral material and bass accentuation. Unique songs like the alternative "G2g" and retro-R&B "Health Food" add to the album's diversity, with "Flashback" showcasing a jazzier style and impressive drum tracks. The album's closing track, “I Wasn’t Told,” is a magical composition with swelling strings that provide a beautiful conclusion. HAN is a worthwhile R&B album that creates a sentimental yet danceable atmosphere, completed by Berhana’s soothing voice and funky bass guitar. The album’s themes often touch on nostalgic reminiscences and the pursuit of relationships, with clever connections between tracks for smooth cross-fades. Additionally, some tracks serve as comical sound bites mimicking airline instructions, adding a unique touch to this engaging and innovative album.
