Tuesday

"Tuesday," as Chaz described in his Spotify bio, channels a specific yet forever-relatable sense of adolescent unease, and I think that vibe was really captured in this song. In the chorus, Chaz sings in a teen-like manner, talking to his friend (or maybe his significant other?) about being awake since Tuesday, listening to a modern love song about a celebrity breakup. It reminds me of my own junior high days. In the verse, GGKnows, one of the Genius contributors, thinks Chaz is lamenting how today’s media can feel predictable, repetitive, and mundane, which can also be said about our daily conversations. Chaz seems to crave spontaneity and unpredictability in his interactions. The instrumental is definitely a bop for me. The hip-hop-influenced drum kits with a fast pace, combined with the jumpy bassline, create a 2000s pop-punk house party atmosphere. The tension builds with a very distorted guitar that feels chopped before letting it flow in the second chorus. To top it off, Chaz’s high-pitched background vocals singing "realize" entrap you in this unskippable song. "Tuesday" is the first single from Toro y Moi’s upcoming album, aptly named "Hole Erth," which will be released on September 6th, 2024. Chaz described this album as his most unexpected and bold move yet, diving into rap-rock, SoundCloud rap, and Y2K emo, and it's said to have the most artist features of any Toro y Moi album. This song is also one of theneedledrop’s best tracks of the week, featured in his July 1st, 2024 Weekly Track Roundup. If this song got the “best teeth in the game” YouTuber’s seal of approval, it gets one from me too.
