The Price of Tea in China
This album marks the first brilliant collaboration between Detroit native Boldy James and renowned super-producer The Alchemist. A friend recommended this project to me, and it quickly became one of my favorite listens. I've long admired The Alchemist for his production prowess—his ability to create rich, immersive soundscapes while maintaining a minimalist touch is nothing short of genius. He brings that exact magic to this LP. Every sample, every drum hit (when they appear) is meticulously crafted, resulting in beats that are both sparse and profoundly atmospheric.
As for Boldy James, his pen game is razor-sharp. His writing is vivid and precise, allowing you to easily visualize the gritty narratives he spins. Coupled with his addictive, laid-back flows, his delivery pulls you deeper into the moody world they’ve constructed together.
One standout track for me is Grey October, which exemplifies the synergy between Boldy and Alchemist. Boldy's coke-laced, streetwise bars are matched perfectly with the haunting, vibe-heavy production. The result is a dark, moody, yet richly textured ambiance. It’s the kind of music that feels luxurious in its restraint—what I'd describe as "expensive rap."
The album’s features are equally impressive and never feel out of place. On the third track, Surf & Turf, Vince Staples jumps in with an animated performance, discussing his upbringing and success while effortlessly complementing Boldy’s grounded style. Griselda's own Benny The Butcher makes a notable appearance on Scrape The Bowl, the fifth track, where he and Boldy trade verses on a grimy, hard-hitting banger. It’s easily my favorite feature on the project. Freddie Gibbs also shines on S.N.O.R.T., delivering a menacing verse that adds yet another layer to the album's dark undertones.
Overall, The Price of Tea in China is a phenomenal album that I’d recommend to anyone who appreciates top-tier lyricism and masterful production. Boldy and The Alchemist have created something special here—one that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
