I Will Be My Own Hell Because There Is a Devil Inside My Body
This is my personal favorite of the first three TS releases. It experiments with more sounds than "Waste Yrself" or "Bad Vibes Forever." Although "Waste Yrself" is more consistent in sound, I love the change of pace on "I Will Be My Own Hell..." with its range from Midwest Emo to minimalistic piano motifs. I genuinely love this record. It's unlike any other TS release because, at moments, it will be loud and abrasive, almost like being choked, then quiet and soothing, like being held by a loved one. The record does have its flaws, though. It's really short, and while that's not necessarily bad, this band could benefit from a longer run time to give us more music and develop their skills further. Some of the tracks feel like boring filler, not the good kind. "Anne" is not a great album opener—it's just static noise with some humming and dialogue that feels overdone. "Cop Graveyard" starts slow and sluggish, which is disappointing because you expect more noise after "The Way We Were With People," and it ruins the pacing of the album. The second part of "Cop Graveyard" is better and sets up "Dan Vs. Maryland," which isn’t a highlight track either. It’s not as good with the vocals or instrumentals as "Give Me Back to the Sky," and the mixing feels snobby. One of the highlight tracks is "Swallow," a slow and beautiful melancholic track that lets us wind down from the gut-punching three-track run before it and ends the album perfectly.
