After leaving from Genesis, Gabriel's debut solo album played it safe. While the music leans more towards commercialism compared to his time with Genesis, his distinct vocal style still evokes his original feeling overall. The standout track, "Solsbury Hill," delivered an immediate hit single and subtly addressed his departure from the band. Other tracks like "Morbund the Burgermeister" and "Modern Love" all have upbeat melodies reminiscent of his previous work. "Excuse Me" adds an amusing, old-fashioned touch, while "Here Comes the Flood" closes the album with a mix of quiet verses and bombastic choruses. Although Gabriel's vocals take the spotlight with minimal instrumental work, the album remains less prog-oriented than his Genesis days, yet still a commendable solo effort that builds on his band experience.
