The New Sound
This album is seriously one of the best debuts I’ve come across. From the jump, I knew I was gonna be into it. I mean, how could I not be? Black Midi’s music is already on another level, so it wasn’t a matter of if I’d like this—it was more like, how much?
And wow, Geordie Greep actually blew my expectations out of the water. With The New Sound, he took all the cool stuff I love about Black Midi and just dialed it up. It’s got way more jazz, more prog, and way more genre-blending. The ideas are so out there, but they totally work, making the whole thing a blast to listen to.
Production? Top-tier. As expected, but still impressive. It’s like Greep grabbed a bunch of different styles, smashed them together, and somehow made them flow perfectly. You’ve got fast, jazzy guitar riffs on one track, then these chill acoustic guitars on the next. On The Magician, the mandolins and all the other random instruments just sound amazing. And then, out of nowhere, you’ll catch these wild synth lines that throw you off in the best way.
There’s no downtime at all. The New Sound keeps you hooked with all these twists, but it never feels like too much. While Black Midi’s stuff was more in-your-face aggressive, this album feels more chaotic, but in a playful way that only Greep could pull off.
This is one of those records that’s gonna stick around. It feels fresh, different, and honestly, a game-changer. Geordie Greep really just took everything I loved about Black Midi and cranked it up to 100.
