Soul Trash
The mixtape "Soul Trash" by Toro y Moi, though not entirely new for fans, has been officially released on streaming platforms with four new tracks. Originally a compilation shared earlier in the year, this release offers a glimpse into unfinished ideas, evident in the abrupt stops and unpolished finishes throughout the project. Despite being released around the same time as his latest full album "Mahal," "Soul Trash" doesn't feel like a collection of B-side tracks or leftovers from that project. Instead, it presents a diverse range of Chaz's signature sounds, including psychedelic alternative, bluesy soul-rock, chillwave, and heavy electronic indie-pop. Moreover, it introduces a relatively new sound from Toro y Moi—a version of alt hip-hop with a psychedelic twist. The mixtape’s wide range, merging various genres, and unpolished edges create a cohesive, melodic bounce that encapsulates the full galaxy of Toro's music in one project. Originally dropped on Dropbox in January, this official release of "Soul Trash" features a different track list but still showcases Chaz's hip-hop side with blissful psychedelic beats layered with washed-out trap percussion and auto-tuned sung/rapped verses, creating a hazy and atmospheric effect. It's as if Chaz blended soundscapes and ethos from previous Toro projects with a newer, more current sound. While not every track is perfect and many don't exceed the two-minute mark, which is perhaps the project's only major flaw, the mixtape's short tracks reinforce each other, creating a cohesive, fun vibe best enjoyed in complete listens. "Soul Trash" is another great project from Chaz this year, offering amazing little moments that keep listeners coming back.
