Grippy
This song by Cash Cobain features a main verse from J. Cole, whose opening line is noteworthy. In this track, J. Cole opts for a relaxed delivery over an R&B-tinged beat, yet his awkward lyrics present a significant hurdle. The line, "She said she was gay until I slayed, now she strictly dickly," stands out for all the wrong reasons. Initially, I held J. Cole in high regard, especially considering his thoughtful handling of the Lil Pump situation and some of the introspective tracks from 'The Off-Season.' However, the more he writes, the more he seems like an out-of-touch older person struggling to adapt to modern sensibilities. This particular lyric is disappointing, and his repetitive use of the word "Grippy" feels unbecoming for someone of his stature and experience. Despite this, the song isn't a complete loss. The beat, while unconventional, has a certain smoothness to it that can be appreciated. Cash Cobain's verse, in contrast to J. Cole's, isn't bad at all. His contribution helps salvage the track to some extent. It's easy to dismiss the song because of J. Cole's problematic verse, but with a different approach, there might have been something truly worthwhile here. The potential is evident, even if it's overshadowed by the missteps in the lyrics.
