drunk prayer
MAVI is back with new music after two tough years in his personal life, which left him struggling to create. He found his way back through visual art and design, and now the North Carolina native is gearing up to release his third album, ‘Shadow Box,’ on August 9th. Along with the announcement, MAVI dropped a new single, ‘drunk prayer,’ offering a glimpse into the record's raw vulnerability. The song dives into a period of grief and family issues that led to alcoholism and mental health struggles. ‘drunk prayer’ kicks off with MAVI grappling with how to conquer the inner demon he's had since childhood, then shifts into an honest and uplifting confessional over Angelo LeRoi's production. Reflecting on ‘Shadow Box,’ MAVI shared: “I was really sad about the last album. I didn’t know how to get back into making stuff the way I like. I felt hopeless, started drinking heavily, and dealt with love, heartbreak, and being there for my family. I had to relearn how to make art. My path back involved visual art, fashion, interior design, and seeing design as both an artistic framework and an organizational force in society. A lot of the album's backbone came from a design book, ‘The Black Experience in Design.’ From that, I learned that design is power—the ability to determine the order of things is power. The orderliness in the lives of the devoutly religious became an attractive subtext during the creation of this album.”
