Blanket

"Blanket" is the third studio album by former member and front-man of rap-collective "BROCKHAMPTON" Kevin Abstract, and it is not that bad. I've been wanting to listen to this album for a while now, but negative reviews have always scared me away from that thought. Now that I've done it, I can confidently say that I don't know why this is so low-rated. I really enjoy this album. Over the course of 13 tracks, Kevin delivers us an emotional banger. He shares his vulnerability, tackles deep personal elements of his life, and does it all outstandingly well. The main topic of this album is love. Many of us have heard this plenty of times before but this time it's... different. These songs just don't get old for me. Songs like the intro "When The Rope Post 2 Break," "Madonna," which, in my opinion, is a perfect song, and "My Friend" are all nearly perfect and make the whole experience even better. On this album, Kevin experiments with elements of Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Bedroom Pop and many more. The production is mostly guitar-focused and his vocals are very different compared to more of his other stuff (I have only heard him on BROCKHAMPTON before this, so it's safe to say that I was very caught off-guard), but I really like them. It is an album that sounds incredibly well sonically and honestly, this might be one of my favourite albums of recent times. While I've seen people complain about his voice, the production and other elements, I feel like especially those things make me like the album even more. Kevin's chorus game is so incredibly strong that every single chorus gets stuck in my head after listening to a song. I like listening to this project so much and will 100% be returning to it more than once in the future. Though the one major issue is the very active genre-angst, while it's admirable that Kevin Abstract is making an attempt at very new sounds and gernres, there are very few moments where I'm convinced he knows how to handle it. On "Blanket," Kevin Abstract goes indie rock, and the result can sometimes be even more indistinct than many other indie rock bands. However, I honestly think that if that's what he's going for, it's pretty well executed -- it's not like he's failing to match any specific sound.
