LSD and the Search of God
Damn… So much to say about this 22-minute EP. This is LSD and the Search for God’s debut EP, which came out in 2007. They only have one more EP, released in 2016. As you can see, they are not very active. They are a Californian psychedelic rock and shoegaze band formed by Andy Liszt (singer and guitarist), Sophia Campbell (singer), Chris Fifield (guitarist), Steve Kennedy (drummer), and Caleb Rush (bassist). The bassist and the drummer are no longer part of the band. Now that you’ve had a quick debrief, here’s the review.
There are only five tracks on this EP. These five tracks were able to captivate a fan base for nine years until they released a new project in 2016. Let me just say that I get why. As their name suggests, this is a trippy listen. There’s a lot of reverb and distortion on the instruments, creating a soundwave that makes the shape of an S in your mind. This is psych rock done really well. There are two singers in this band, but honestly, you might not even notice one of them. Andy Liszt’s vocals are so quiet and on the same note as the production that it’s hard to hear a word. On the other hand, Sophia Campbell has a beautiful voice that is much more audible through the loud instrumentation. To be honest, I like that, as it creates more space for the amazing job the band is doing with their instruments. Speaking of which, the guitarist literally steals the show on almost every track. He uses his whammy bar a lot, creating a beautiful wavy ambiance. On the track “Starting Over,” he comes in with this harsh riff that complements the heaviness so well. It’s probably my favorite track on the project. The drums and the bass take a step back on these songs, making more room for the guitar. They support well but still give good performances. I have nothing to say other than the quietness of the singer, which is probably more of a creative decision than a mixing error, but it still annoys me a little. From what I heard, this EP talks a lot about love and breakups. It’s an amazing album—short and sweet—with one small flaw, but other than that, I have no negative comments about my listening experience.
