Deep Purple has been doing pretty alright since their 2013 album Now What?!. They've been working well creatively and commercially, proving they're still a powerhouse even after 56 years in the game and a solid line-up for over 30 of those years. Their latest album is a blast, full of energy and way more fun than the critics might expect. It's classic Deep Purple, but with a fresh twist. They've always been great at mixing crazy guitar solos and big riffs with catchy, pop-like tunes, thanks to Don Airey's keyboards (and before him, the late Jon Lord). You can hear this blend perfectly on tracks like the wild and catchy “Portable Door” and the punky “Now You’re Talkin’”. Even at 78, Ian Gillan’s voice is still strong, though his lyrics can be a bit of a mystery. For example, the single “Lazy Sod” was inspired by hearing that Dolly Parton has written over 5000 songs, while he’s only written 500. But you'd never guess that from the lyrics, which talk about lying in bed, worrying if he turned off the gas as the oceans rise. There are a few slower songs, like “If I Were You”, which has a cool, laid-back L.A. rock vibe, kind of like Iggy Pop’s album from last year. But most of the album is all about those heavy, electric guitar sounds. Highlights include the punchy opener “Show Me” and the bluesy “No Money to Burn”, with Gillan’s gritty and playful lyrics like, “I hear a blackbird sing/I feel a scorpion sting/ Whatever gets to me first, it is what it is, man... it could be worse”. Deep Purple might not be winning over a ton of new fans at this point, but for anyone who already likes them, this album is a treat. It’s a feel-good ride for those who love seeing rock legends prove that age is just a number.
